AGM and Arts Care Festival

Dear CGSNI Members

Our Annual Meeting takes place this Sunday 12th May at 3pm, This will involve the presentation of Reports from the Chair, the Secretary and the Treasurer and the election of a Committee for the coming year. If you have any issues you would like to discuss please get in touch with the Secretary before the meeting.

Following the meeting there will be a members’ recital. This will be an opportunity for the ensemble to play through its repertoire before our performance the next day (13th May) at the Arts Care festival in Belfast City Hospital, and include the quartet and duet pieces. For anyone wishing to support the performers the concert is at 7.30pm in Seminar Room 3 in the Cancer Centre located on the first floor. Go straight ahead when emerging from the lift and follow the corridor in front of you. The concert will be shared with students from the Ulster College of Music who will perform during the first half of the evening.

The next day (Tuesday 14th at 8pm, Outpatients Department, BCH Tower Block) Keith, Robbie, and Steve White (Keyboard) will play a recital of well known music by Mozart, Schubert, Vivaldi, Purcell, Pachelbel, Bach and Telemann. Again your support would be much appreciated if you are interested.

Regards,

CGSNI Secretary

April Events – Lots happening!

Hi all,

The next society meeting will take place on 10th April at the Ulster College of Music, beginning 3pm.

Brian Keenan will be giving a performance during the second half of the meeting, after tea break at around 4.30pm and lasting for 45mins. Brian will also be at the members’ recital beforehand, which will take the form of a mini workshop, to offer feedback on performances.

If you wish to present a piece please let the chairman know in advance, and preference will be given to those performances. There will be spaces on the day, also.

This is a great opportunity for valuable feedback from an experienced teacher and what promises to be a great performance programme.

Before this all happens though, the society’s ensemble group will be playing at the Ards Guitar Festival on Wed 6thApril, 8pm in support of Wiktoria Szubelak. More information about this performance, and the whole Ards Guitar Festival programme, can be found via the following link – http://www.ardsguitarfestival.co.uk/whats-on/

An exciting few weeks for classical guitar! Hope to see you all then!

Info for the New Year

The next meeting of the Guitar Society will be on the first Sunday of 2013, 6th January at 3pm in the Ulster College of Music, Windsor Avenue.  This will consist of cluster groups and a Members’ recital.
The secretary proposes to hold the next meeting of the ensemble group two weeks later on Sunday 20th Jan.  Again, please let him know if you can come and we will sort out a venue nearer the time.  New members are always welcome.  The Ensemble is a mixed ability group so you don’t need to worry too much about your standard although the ability to read music is clearly an advantage!
Best wishes for Christmas and I hope to see you at meetings and events in 2013.

Upcoming Events

1.  Robert and me will be playing classical guitar duets at the Urban Soul Cafe situated below May Street Presbyterian Church (May Street, behind the City Hall – at the junction with Alfred Street) on THURSDAY 29th NOVEMBER at 7.30pm.  We would appreciate your support if possible.  If you haven’t got back to me already please let me know if you are able to come –  I need numbers for Cafe who will be providing refreshments at the interval.  There will be collection at the end of the recital in aid of Artscare, Northern Ireland.

2.  The Ensemble group meets for the first time for the 2012-2013 season on SUNDAY 2nd DECEMBER.  I suggest we meet at my house at 2.30pm and work until approx 5pm.  I intend that we look at the new pieces, decide what we can play and distribute parts.  Again please let me know if you are coming if you haven’t already done so.  Gerry has suggested that we consider playing at additional events as well and the Ards Festival and Holywood Culture night and that if the Urban Soul Cafe proves to be a suitable venue the CGSNI could put on a fund raising performance for friends and family.

3.  I shall also soon need numbers for the Christmas Dinner and Social.  Once again this will be held at Rockmount Golf Club just outside Carryduff (http://www.rockmountgolfclub.com/Christmas-Menus.aspx).  We normally meet at 2pm with a view to eating at 3pm followed by playing.  We have never had a finishing time but generally people have dispersed around 6pm.

4. Elizabeth Kenny (Lute) is playing a lunchtime concert at the Harty Room, Queens University at 1.10pm on Thursday 29th November.  The concert will feature music by some of the giants of the lute repertoire in the early-17th century, including works by Dowland, Laurencin and Kapsberger.

5.  The Belfast Music Society are bringing Milos Karadaglic to play a summer celebrity recital on Wednesday 5th June 2013 at 8pm.  This will be in St Thomas Church, Eglantine Avenue, Belfast

I shall look forward to seeing you at these events

Keith

Ensemble Practice!

As the society will not be having a regular meeting on the first Sunday in December (due to Christmas dinner) the society will instead be hosting an ensemble practice day instead.

Some music has been circulated amongst society members, chosen for a mixed ability group, and the intention of this first ensemble practice will most likely be to decide who should take which parts, and which pieces are suitable for performance.

If you are a CGSNI ensemble member, or even if you are just interested in joining the ensemble or listening in, please do come to the Ulster College of Music, Windsor Avenue, Belfast for 2.30pm on Sunday 2nd December. If you haven’t got the music yet you can let the committee know by emailing:

secretary <dot> cgsni <at> gmail <dot> com

(Replace the words in <> with the relevant punctuation).

Hope to see you there!
