August Newsletter – New Season

Barbeque: On Sunday 30th July Edwin and Joy Mitchell kindly hosted the annual barbeque at their home in Raffrey, despite being in the middle of arranging their move to Iowa. They had organised an impressive gazebo to shelter us from the downpour and provided a set of charcoal infernos to counteract the rain, so that we were able to cook our repast. There was some grand music afterwards in their sunroom, followed by an immense guitar-shaped sponge and cream gateaux made (I presume) by Joy herself.

Bangor Festival: This weekend we had another great summer festival at Hamilton Hub, Bangor. Mini-fest is a misnomer – from now on it’s a Festival! Once again, we were privileged to have the skills and musicality of our own gifted professionals, Brian and Sean. Brian gave a lovely recital on Saturday, executed with artistry and charm. Whilst Sean declined to undertake a formal concert, he performed several pieces and extracts in a relaxed setting which one might call a lecture/recital. His delivery, as always, was wonderful and most inspiring to the festival delegates. Pictures are available on our Facebook page.

The New Season: The 2023-24 season will begin in September. The Autumn term programme is as follows:

10th September Regular meeting and a short presentation: Enhancing your performance (etiquette in classical music performance) – update on Sean’s presentation.
8th October Regular meeting
5th November Regular meeting
3rd December Regular meeting
10th December Christmas lunch at Rockmount Golf Club

The committee has come up with the idea of providing an opportunity to experience ensemble playing for those members who have not yet tried it. Committee members and others will be asked to lead some simple duets or trios during the break-out sessions. We hope society members will be interested.

Members Subscription: In view of rising costs, including insurance, the committee has decided that the annual membership subscription should rise to £25.00/concession £20.00. This is the first time in over 20 years that the subscription has been increased.

Here’s looking forward to more great guitar music in the upcoming term!
Robert, Chairman
