David McKittrick

Dear all,

Yesterday (Tuesday 3rd March) we received the sad news of the death of our founder member David McKittrick. David had been diagnosed with cancer in the autumn and he had been undergoing treatment. However this had not been successful and the family had been told to prepare themselves.

I’m sure you will wish to join me in expressing the sympathy of the Society to Evelyn and the family circle.

David was a man of vision and, along with the late Jim McCullagh, saw the opportunity to establish a Classical Guitar Society in the Province. Furthermore he had the contacts, drive and organisational skills to realise this vision.

The Society Ensemble will be playing a fund raising concert at High Street Presbyterian Church in Holywood. I think it would be appropriate to dedicate our performance to David’s memory.

Below are some pictures of David taken during happier times.

Guitars for sale

A few individuals have contacted the society in the hope of selling guitars in their possession. Here is the description of the first:

“It is a Manuel Rodriguez Model FC Pro Classic Guitar in excellent condition and has been well looked after. Selling due to the fact my grandfather can no longer play it.

I have recently been in contact with a guitar dealer that was able to give me a used value price of £1050 but this is negotiable.”

The second has been offered by an aspiring luthier who is selling their concert instrument in order to pursue building guitars. His description is below:
“Please find attached photos of the guitar I have for sale. As stated this is a 1a Especial Doplo Tapa with a beautiful Brazillian rosewood back and doubled Brazillian sides. The spruce top gives fantastic seperation and at the same time a rich tone with plenty of sustain. The condition of this guitar is excellent with only minor play wear and some minor marks in the laquer. I am only asking £3500 gbp and I will pay shipping. Considering it is worth £5500-6500 in its current condition this is a bargain.”

Another Successful Performance

The society is pleased to report that we have just completed another successful performance at this year’s Ards Guitar Festival, performing just before the very affable Pat Coldrick. Well done to everyone that participated, and Pat for his great performance. See you at the next meeting!

Upcoming Events 2014/15

Hello everyone!

The Society is gearing up for the next year of activities, and the events page has been updated with the next round of dates for meetings. Have a look to see what’s happening!

Some important things to note for the near future:

The first meeting of the Society will be on the second Sunday of September. That is, the 14thSeptember at 3pm in Ulster College of Music, Windsor Avenue, Belfast. It will be a regular meeting giving opportunities for everyone to perform in small or large groups, or simply to listen.

Holywood Culture Night will be held on Friday 19th September at High Street Presbyterian Church, Holywood (same venue as previous years). The plan at the moment is for the Society members to play 2 x 30 minute slots with a 30 minute break, beginning at 7pm. This will limit the number of players who can be accommodated but please let me know if you would be willing to participate and I shall see who can be fitted in.

Ards Guitar Festival takes place from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th October. Members of the Society will perform on Sunday 5th Oct at 7.30 pm in Kiltonga Hall. Because time is again limited the majority of the performance will be devoted to the work of the ensemble. The main performer will be Pat Coldrick from Dublin. Those of you who saw Pat at the City of Derry Guitar Festival last year will know what an entertaining performer Pat is and what a range of repertoire he has.

Hope to see you at the next meeting!
